Why need soil test? and how to make soil testing report for building construction?
What is soil testing?
Soil testing is a crucial step in the construction process. The soil on which a building is to be constructed needs to be tested to ensure that it can provide adequate support to the building structure. The main purpose of soil testing for building construction is to determine the soil’s strength, stability, and suitability for supporting the proposed building. And soil’s capability will be found when Soil Testing Report is declared by the engineer then the civil engineer complate the designing parte of buildng structure and provide structural drawing and architectural drawing.
The following types of soil tests are typically performed for building construction:
- Soil bearing capacity test
- Soil compaction test
- Soil permeability test
- Soil pH test
- Soil classification test
Laboratory Soil Tests
- Particle Size Distribution
- The object of grain size analysis is to determine the size of the soil grains, and the percentage by weight of soil particles of different particles size, comprising a soil sample. The process consists of either sieve analysis or hydrometer analysis or both.
- Specific Gravity Test
- The specific Gravity of a solid is defined as the rate of the unit weight of the solid in the air to the unit weight of water.
- Direct Shear Test
- The direct shear test can be performed for both cohesion-less & cohesive soil to determine shear strength, angle of internal friction, cohesion c, volume change, etc.
- Atterberg Limit
- The Atterberg limits are a group of soil properties that indicate the soil’s ability to change from one state to another under the influence of varying moisture content. The Atterberg limits were developed by a Swedish scientist, Albert Atterberg, in the early 1900s, and they are commonly used in geotechnical engineering to classify and evaluate soil properties.
Soil Testing Report
When completed soil collection from the proposed project to analyzed in the laboratory and pass some testing mentioned above such as Specific Gravity Test, Direct Shear Test, Standard penetration test, etc.
To make a soil testing report in an investigation sheet, follow these steps:
- Create a title
- Introduction
- Site Description
- Testing Methods
- Test Results
- Analysis
- Conclusions and Recommendations
- References
- Appendices
When creating a soil testing report, it is important to ensure that the report is accurate, clear, and concise. The report should include all the necessary information to support the recommendations made and ensure that the construction project is safe and stable.
